k4 KLEINFELDER
January 5, 1988
File: 24-2133-10
i
Mr. Bob Smith
California Ammonia Co.
212 Frank West Circle, Suite E JAN 111989
Stockton, CA 95206
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
SUBJECT: Soil Sampling Results PERMIT/SERVICES
California Ammonia Facility
Stockton, California
Dear Mr. Smith:
Enclosed are the analytical results for the soil samples collected at the California Ammonia
facility at 2201 N. Washington Street, Stockton, California. The samples were submitted
for laboratory analyses to assess the possible presence of petroleum hydrocarbon
i contamination beneath two excavated 20,000-gallon diesel tanks.
I
Soil Sampling Activities
On December 14, 1988, a Kleinfelder geologist collected six soil samples from beneath two
20,000-gallon diesel tanks. It is Kleinfelder's understanding that these tanks contained
diesel fuel. Mr. Jaime Favilia of the San Joaquin Local Health District was present during
the tank removal and specified the sampling locations and analyses. Soil samples 17011,
17012, and 17013 were collected from beneath the northern tank. Samples 17014, 17015,
and 17016 were collected from beneath the southern tank. The soil sample locations are
ishown on Plate 1, Soil Sample Location Map.
I
The samples were delivered under chain-of-custody to Enseco-California Analytical
Laboratory in West Sacramento, California. The samples were analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) extractable (Method 3550) by GC-FID and benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020.
JJ TPH as diesel was detected at 14 mg/kg in sample 17011 and 78 mg/kg in sample 17015.
BTEX concentrations were below laboratory detection limits in these two samples and the
remaining four samples. TPH was below laboratory detection limits in the other four
samples.
Limitations
i
Kleinfelder performed this investigation in accordance with generally accepted standards of
care which exist in Northern California at this time. It should be recognized that definition
and evaluation of geologic conditions is a difficult and inexact art. Judgements leading to
conclusions and recommendations are generally made with incomplete knowledge of the
subsurface conditions present. More extensive studies, including subsurface investigations,
may be performed to reduce uncertainties. If the client wishes to continue this
investigation, Kleinfelder should be notified for additional consultation. No warranty,
expressed or implied, is made.
KLEINFELDER 9795 Business Park Drive, Suite C, Sacramento, CA 95827 19161 366-1701
