E-25
Page 1
1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This procedure covers the field application of cold applied tape to
uncoated pipe, gauge lines, welded joints, fittings, and irregular-
shaped appurtenances on tape, asphalt, somastic, or plastic coated
pipelines.
1.2 The procedure describes the preparation of the pipe or fitting, and
the application of primer and tape.
2.0 PREPARATION OF SURFACE
2.1 Prior to welding a joint, the wrap should be trimmed back
approximately S" to 6" from the end of the pipe. Approximately 12"
of wrap should be removed when installing a service tee or extending
laterals. The coating should be cleaned from the pipe for about 5"
to 6" in all directions from the intended welding area. The outer
wrap on tape wrapped pipe should be removed an additional distance
equal to the width of the tape being applied.
2.2 The end of the wrap should be square cut. The wrap at this point
must be well bonded and of normal thickness. The edges of somastic
coating should be tapered for at least one tape width from the cut
end. The surface of the asphalt wrap or plastic inner wrap must be
free of outer wrap, plastic or *Kraft paper, whitewash, mica flakes,
dirt, and other material not providing a good bonding surface for
I the primer and tape.
2.3 All bare steel shall be free of dust, dirt, grease, oil, and other
foreign matter. Practical removal can be done by either power wire
brushing or hand wire brushing. Grease and oil can be removed by
use of a solvent that leaves no oily or dusty film remaining on the
steel surface.
2.4 welds shall be cleaned of all welding slag. splatter, and scale.
Sharp edges or burrs shall be removed by grinding or filing.
2.5 Weld shall be no more than "warm to the touch" prior to
priming and taping. y°ftsseM
I. rl`
2.6 Moisture, if present, shall be removed prior to priming
and taping.
' Jp 41fCHl,H1GP S
r
fF Jh•C t.Ltt Jih
APPROVED BY Rc Q,dd Atta r h I - Daj ,H P In-14 X P4r 4 4 BFO CJT
li
tt REY.
