APPENDIX A.1 <br /> A.1 Driving Safety—Section 5 <br /> Inspect the following items monthly or at 5000 mile intervals,whichever comes first YesMo <br /> Check that the following external lights and reflectors are clean and functional: <br /> Headlights(high and low beams) <br /> Tail lights and brake lights <br /> Tum signals <br /> Four-way emergency flashers <br /> Test that dash indicators work when corresponding lights are turned on: <br /> Left and right tum signals <br /> Four-way emergency flashers <br /> High beam headlights <br /> Tire inflation:Check for proper inflation using a tire gauge <br /> Tire tread depth:Check for minimum tread depth per tire following manufacturer's recommendations;if manufacturer's recom- <br /> mendations are unknown,minimum is I/s inch on all tires <br /> Tire condition:Check that tread is evenly worn and look for cuts or other damage to tread or sidewalls;make sure valve caps and <br /> stems are not damaged <br /> Oil,brake fluid,power steering fluid,and transmission fluid levels shall measure above"add"mark on dip slick <br /> Windshield wipers:Check that wiper arms and blades are secure,not damaged and operate smoothly <br /> Windshield washer fluid filled and operating correctly <br /> Inspect parking brake for proper operation <br /> Batterycomrections do not show signs of excessive corrosion;where provided,check battery maintenance indicator <br /> Check ALL belts for snugness(up to 3/4 inch play at center of belt),cracks,or frays <br /> Table 1—Periodic Vehicle Inspection <br /> Before Entering Vehicle: <br /> Look for dripping fluids on underside of engine and transmission <br /> Visually inspect each the for proper inflation(Note:radial tires will"balloon"slightly on the sidewall so learn the appearance of your tires <br /> when properly inflated) <br /> Before Starting Engine: <br /> Mirrors should be clean and adjusted properly <br /> Windshield should be clean with no stickers,damage,ice or other items that obstruct vision <br /> Check that safety belt is securely mounted,adjusts and latches properly <br /> After Starting Engine: <br /> Check all gauges and warning lights for normal operation position <br /> With the engine running,check for excessive play by turning the steering wheel back and forth <br /> Check horn for proper operation <br /> Pump the brake pedal three times,then hold it down for five seconds;brake pedal should not move(depress)during the five <br /> seconds <br /> Table 2—Vehicle Daily Pre-trip Checklist <br /> 45 <br />
