Page 3 • <br /> It must be stressed that information released about an oil spill may be used in <br /> legal action against the company, group or agency involved. <br /> Although the main question initially will be, "How much was spilled? How serious <br /> is the incident?", initial estimates are often hazardous until an accurate figure <br /> is available and approved for release. In most cases, no attempt should be made to <br /> explain the cause of the spill or any estimate given as to the volume of the spill , <br /> costs of cleanup or other costs associated with the spill , until such data has been <br /> carefully scrutinized and approved for release. In some cases, such as a tank <br /> truck overturning, the cause may be evident and could be readily released, but the <br /> reason for the cause may be obscure until proven. <br /> Spokesmen should be careful not to speculate about any aspect of the situation. If <br /> the answer is not known to the question, it is obvious you may say so, and add <br /> nothing more. <br />
