2.0 TECHNICAL DISCUSSION
o General Description
The mailing address for Del Monte plant No. 33 is 2716 E. Miner Ave.
in Stockton, CA. Exceltech removed three (3), 10,000 gallon fuel
gasoline tanks at the Del Monte Stockton storage area located at the
carrier of Myrtle St. and Filbert St. The tanks previously supplied
products to a gasoline station which was latter purchased by Del
Monte and subsequently taken out of service. The tanks were buried
beneath a 40'X35' concrete pad positioned immediately adjacent to the
service station building.
After exposing the top surfaces of the tanks, Exceltech discovered
that all three tanks were filled with water, necessitating its removal
prior to excavating the tanks. Analysis of the water in the tanks
revealed that the hydrocarbon levels were relatively low (less than 10
mg/kg) and lead was riot detected. Based on these results, the City of
Stockton, Municipei Utilities Department permitted Del Monte to
k dispose of the liquids in the City sanitary sewer.
Once the tanks were removed, the soil beneath the tanks was found
to be contaminated with gasoline. Exceitech proceeded to aerate the
soil by rnechanically turning the soil until the relatively volatile
constituents Had vaporized yielding material that could be directly
backfilled into the excavation.
Finally, after compaction, the excavated area was resurfaced with
an asphalt cover.
o Subsurface Inspection and Soil Analysis
Although an obvious source for fuel leakage (i.e. pipe breaks or tank
holes) n,as not present, gasoline contamination of the soil below th&
tanks was imrnediately evident from a strong vapor smell present
when the tanks were remove Subsequent laboratory analysis,,
confirmed that soil Contarnination ,vas particularily high beneath thile
northern tank identified as Tank .'4 (see Trace Analysis Laboratory
results dated 10/26/65). Fortunately, the contamination appeared to
be limited to a depth of approximately seven (7) feet as summarized
beIo
Page- 3 OCT +. a
6N\%IRomiENTAL HEALT
PERMITJS6RVICF0
