This oxygenate represents about 10% by volume of
gasoline at this time, and it does not share the same characteristics as the petroleum
constituents in gasoline with regard to solubility, density, environmental fate, etc. As a
result, we are especially concerned that tanks currently in operation storing gasoline do
not leak. In other words, because of MTBE in gasoline, it is even more important that
our leak prevention program is sound.
As a check, we are doing some research on recently reported tank leak cases to find out
how the release was discovered, and whether there is any indication of success or failure
of the leak detection system. Tank testing is of particular interest.
We would appreciate your help by:
Filling in the information indicated below for the leak cases reported in your
jurisdiction as shown on the attachment. We are interested in knowing for the
tanks that were closed (TC) if there is any indication that the tanks were previously
tested and determined to be tight and were later discovered leaking.
We would also like to receive copies of the available monitoring records (tank
testing, annual MIR statements, SIR test results, automatic tank gauging results)
going back two years for each of the tanks shown in your jurisdiction.
HOW LEAK DATE OF
SITE ADDRESS TANKAGE DISCOVERED TANK TEST PASS/FAIL
Please attach supplemental sheets if needed.
