Because of a miscommunication between our agency and the UST
removal contractor, soil and groundwater samples were not collected at the time of the tank
removals.
A 350 gallon diesel UST (TA 163605) was removed from an area near the waste water
treatment building. Groundwater level was 3 feet below surface grade (bsg). The bottom of
the excavation was about 6 feet bsg. Free product was observed floating on the water in the
UST pit by our staff. The UST pit was caving in and it was close to utility lines and a
building, so it was filled with gravel. Therefore, no soil or groundwater samples were
collected from this UST pit.
Two 2000 gallon UST's were removed from an area in front of a maintenance building
across from above ground tanks and a water tower. One UST (TA 163603) had contained
gasoline. The other UST (TA 163604) had contained diesel and then gasoline. The bottom
of these excavations was about 7 feet bsg. On May 26, 1998, 1 witnessed the collection of
two soil samples from each of the UST pits and one soil sample from beneath each of the
two dispensers for a total of 6 soil samples. There was some water in the UST pits but it
had rained and did rain during the sampling so the depth to groundwater in this area was not
verified. The soil was sandy with some clay stringers. The soil was discolored and had
petroleum odor. The soil samples from the TA 163604 tank pit were obtained from about 7.5
feet bsg. The soil samples from the TA 163603 tank pit were obtained from 8.5 and 11 feet
bsg.
When the results of these soil samples are submitted to our agency, we will provide you with
that data. Both areas clearly require further investigation. Since the CVRWQCB is already
overseeing contaminant investigation at the site, our agency is referring the UST petroleum
contamination to you.
A site map and our field notes are included for your information.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
