When a tank is hydrostatically monitored the interstitial space between
the tank walls and the top mounted reservoir is filled with a 30% calcium chloride brine and water
solution_ The calcium chloride solution provides freeze protection down to a minus 55 degrees
Fahrenheit. Water can be used in the interstitial space and reservoir where freeze protection is
not an issue. The top mounted reservoir eliminates excessive fluctuations that occur from volume
changes in the primary tank ground water changes around the tank, and temperature changes.
The reservoir fluid level is kept at the half full level to allow the high and low sensing points of the
electronic sensor to properly read to signal an alarm.
The early Owens-Corning double wall tanks had a large volume for the interstitial space and brine
solution, and the tanks were not shipped with installed brine solution because of the excessive
added weight The tanks had to be brine filled in the field, and the 8,000-gallon double wall tank
for time subject project has an interstitial capacity of 470 gallons.
This fetter conf7rms our conversation thai filling the intersti+tfal space and reservoir in the
field is an accepted process by the tank manufacturer. I was an employee of Owens-Coming
Fiberglas tank division in 1973, and was writing manufacturing specifications for the double wall
tanks when they were first offered in 1984, so 1 am more than qualified to confirm the pis
about which we spoke. If you have additional questions about these tanks, please call me at 800-
537-4730, extension 213.
Sincerely yours,
Aklw-
Robert D.
