Concentrations of benzene and xylenes in the groundwater at the
um Contaminant Levels. The preliminary estimate of the volume of soil that
contains petroleum hydrocarbons exceeds 7,000 cubic yards. This remedial alternative would
riot address groundwater remediation.
5.3 Groundwater Extraction and Treatment
Remediation of groundwater by extraction and treatment would be accomplished by
installation of a pumping system in a groundwater extraction well and treatment by aeration
or carbon filtration. This remedial alternative would involve the evaluation of on site aquifer
parameters followed by design of a water treatment system, with pump and treat alone. This
remedial alternative would not address soil remediation. The time frame for the restoration
of the aquifer may take 5 to 7 years.
5.4 Va or Groundwater Extraction and Treatment
This remedial action alternative may address the remediation of both soil and groundwater
with one remediation system. The p,.-loess would use a vacuum blower connected to one
or more vapor extraction/monitoring well(s). A vacuum pump on the extraction well(s)causes
volatilization of hydrocarbons in the soil. A groundwater pump system will be connected to
an on site monitoring well and groundwater pumped out of the aquifer. This process would
create a cone of depression on the groundwater surface, ensuring containment of the
r hydrocarbon plume and to further expose soils containing petroleum hydrocarbons.
- ---- --- -- --- - --Hydrocarbons-are.volatilized._from_thegroundwater by spray aeration.
