Section Number: 2-1
Issue Date: 05/06/2010
Revision Date:
2-2 WASTEWATER
Overview
This section provides definitions of the types of wastewater generated in production
facilities, information related to regulated processes, reporting requirements and
recordkeeping requirements.
Key Points
All ARAMARK production plants generate process wastewater that may require a
wastewater discharge permit. Operations Support will advise
Plants must adhere to wastewater compliance instructions provided by Operation
Support
Process activities including truck washing that generate wastewater must be directed to
the sanitary sewer
Definitions
Waste Water: The used water and solids from process and domestic
use (i.e. cafeteria or restroom) that are discharged from
any facility or business.
Process Waste Water: Any wastewater resulting from an industrial activity. This
includes laundering operations, boiler blown down, softener
regeneration, and vehicle washing.
Sanitary Waste Water: Any wastewater resulting from normal business
operations that include restrooms and cafeteria functions.
Storm Water/Surface Runoff: Any wastewater resulting from natural occurrence (i.e.
precipitation, snowmelt) that does not include sanitary
or industrial wastes.
Wastewater Requirements
Process wastewater activities may require a discharge permit or authorization. Permits are
typically required if the discharger is a Significant Industrial User (SIU) or discharges over 25,000
gallons per day (GPD). If you plan on increasing production or alter production activities that may
result in discharge volume changes or the introduction of certain elements e.g., metals accounts,
you must notify Operations Support (Compliance & Process Engineering at 630-271-2988) at
least 90 days prior to the change.
Some plants require full-scale wastewater treatment systems to control elements typically
discharged e.g., oil & grease or metals. You must notify Operations Support (Compliance &
Process Engineering at 630-271-2988) if you plan on taking an account that may contain known
metals (hazardous soil account) or increase production greater then 10%.
