Geo(0 ica(Technics Inc.
Fonzia Page 7
SGWI Report
Project No.: 774.2
June 10, 1999
' 4.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusions
Given the data collected in these two investigations and the cleanup work performed in 1995,
Geological Technics Inc. makes the following conclusions:
1. Soil Contamination
• The data shows that only insignificant contamination is present in the soil.
• The soil cleanup work performed by Fortifiber in 1995 appears to have removed all
but a small volume of residual oil contamination in the soil.
' • In a few locations there has been spillage of small quantities of oil on the ground
surface, which has contaminated he upper few inches to few feet of soil. This
situation does not pose a threat tot is property, public health or the environment.
• Motor oil is the predominant residu il contaminant at this site.
' • Minor amounts of diesel are preseni lander the Warehouse.
• The five LUFT metals were within evels detected in background samples.
• Phenol is present in relatively low 1 vels at two locations.
2. Groundwater Contamination
• The data shows that very low to trice concentrations of motor oil are present in the
shallow groundwater over most of the area investigated at this site.
' • Trace concentration of BTEX compounds have been found in the groundwater around
the Former Storage Area.
• The five LUFT metals were within levels detected in background samples.
' • Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate was detected in one groundwater sample from 33 feet
bgs. The concentration is low and it appears to be from an offsite source.
3. Residual Effects
• It is recognized that both soil and groundwater contamination by motor oil is present
on this Property. Groundwater over the central portion of the property is the area
impacted. However, the concentrations are so low as not to be of significance.
' • The remediation of 1995 removed contaminated soil to a depth of 12 feet in the
Former Storage Area. This is also the area with the highest concentration of motor oil
in the groundwater(up to 15 mg/L).
• It is interpreted that residual oil con amination still remains in the soil.
• Groundwater dissolved some of this material and it has migrated in a down gradient
direction.
' Recommendations
Given the conclusions listed above, Geological Technics Inc. recommends that the site be
evaluated for closure and that no further environmental assessment work be performed.
' 5.0 LIMITATIONS
' This report was prepared in accordance with the accepted standards and practices of the field
of environmental geology, groundwater hydrology and good business practices. It should be
recognized that definition and evaluation of environmental conditions is a difficult and'
inexact science. Judgments leading to conclusions and recommendations are generally made
with an incomplete knowledge of the site-specific conditions present.
1
