I992
Page 5
The results of the analyses indicate that hydrocarbon affected soil is present in the recovery
tank area and to a lessor extent in the waste oil tank area,. The hydrocarbon-affected soil
beneath the recovery tank area is not likely the result of the recovery tank leaking or
overfilling. The hydrocarboas in this area are probably from the initial UST leak in 1984.
The hydrocarbons identified in the soil located in the waste oil tank area are probabiy also the
result of the 1984 leak. Ethylene dibromide was not identified in either samples T-North or
T-South. Lead was identified in minor concentrations (possibly background 1 ised on the
USGS Professional Paper 1270, "Element Concentrations in Soils and Other Surficial
Materials of the Conterminous United States", 1984)in samples T-North,WO-pit,and WOS-
Comp.
Cgnclusion
Based on the results of the soil samples collected during the recovery tank removal mnd waste
oil tank installation,hydrocarbon-affected soil is present in both of these areas with the lowest
concentradons occurring in the waste oil tank area. The most likely source of the
hydroc, vbons is the former USTs. This source was removed in 1984, and a groundwater
remediation system is now in place and operational a► the site. To reduce hydrocarbon
concentrations in the soil, ARCO is preparing to initiate a soil remediation program at this
site.
If you have any questions or comments regarding this letter, please call me at(916)4440123.
Very tndy yours,
BROWN AND CALDWELL
teve Misner ay q.
