Soil Sampling Report
ARCO Facility No.6100
Tracy,California
Page 2
piping in an area north of the tank pit and dispensers. Two soil samples (SPT[1-4] and SPT[5-
8]) were collected from the stockpiles on January 22, 2002, in the presence of Mr. Dennis
Catanyag.
Delta received verbal results of the first sampling event which indicated that the petroleum
contamination may be limited to the top 5 feet of soil. A Delta representative returned on
January 23, 2002, to extend the excavated area under the former dispensers to assess the extent
of contamination. Soil from beneath the product dispensers was removed to depths ranging
from approximately 5 to 5.5 feet bgs. The approximate locations of this excavation are
illustrated on Figure 2. Delta collected four soil samples from the bottom of the excavations on
January 23, 2002, in the presence of Supervising Environmental Health Specialist, Margaret
Lagorio. Samples were collected at a depth of approximately 5 to 6 feet bgs. Each sample
location was exposed using a backhoe. Samples were collected by hand driving a brass
sampling tube into the soil collected in the backhoe bucket. The ends of each brass tube were
then covered with Teflon"m sheets and plastic caps, and samples were placed in an ice-chilled
cooler. Each sample was labeled with the ARCO station number, sample name, collection date,
and collection time, and identified on a chain-of-custody form. A waste composite soil sample
was collected on January 23,2002, from the soil stockpile generated during this excavation.
On February 11, 2002, a Delta representative again returned to the site to sample below the two
2-inch diameter steel former product lines, and the three 2-inch diameter single wall fiberglass
former product lines. The approximate location of the samples are shown on Figure 2. These
samples were designated as L2-1 thru L2-3 and were taken from depths ranging from 2.5 feet to
3.5 feet bgs. The samples were taken by driving a brass sampling tube into the soil collected in
the backhoe bucket. Soil samples were collected and handled as described above.
All soil samples were relinquished to Sequoia Analytical, Inc. (Sequoia), a California state-
certified analytical laboratory, for chemical analysis. Delta and Sequoia adhered to strict chain-
of-custody procedures from the time of sample collection to sample analysis. Soil samples
collected from beneath dispensers and product piping were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes
(BTEX) using DHS/LUFT Method, and for methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), tertiary amyl
methyl ether(TAME),tertiary butyl alcohol(TBA), di-isopropyl ether(DIPE), and ethyl tertiary
butyl ether(ETBE) using USEPA Method 8260B. Soil samples collected on January 18, 2002,
were also analyzed for total lead using USEPA Method 6010B. Soil samples collected from
stockpiled soil were analyzed for TPHG, BTEX, and MTBE using DHS/LUFT Method, and for
total lead using USEPA Method 6010B. Laboratory analytical results are presented in Table 1
and certified analytical reports with chain-of-custody documentation are presented in
Appendix A.
Dillard Trucking Company of Byron, California, has transported approximately 315 tons of soil
to Forward Landfill in Manteca, California, for disposal, as a result of the service station
upgrade and remediation piping excavation.
P:\ARCO\6100\REPORTS\6100SSR.doe
