A copy of their written program must be submitted for
E review to BC if requested. The subcontractor's health and safety requirements for this project are
specified by this SSHP.
k
}
HAZARD ANALYSIS
g
j The potential hazards to personnel working at the subject site have been identified as chertical
contamination, physical hazards of working around heavy equipment(drill rig),and cold stress.
i
Each potential hazard relative to the potential for exposur.,is described below.
4
Chemical Contamination
k
The chemical health and safety hazard of this project is the possible inhalation of or direct
contact with hydrocarbons from contaminated soil and groundwater in the location of the former
waste oil tank. Petroleum hydrocarbons that are typically found in a waste oil tank are normally
not as volatile as a product such as gasoline. Therefore, the potential for inhalation of vapors near
the former excavation is low.
EThe typical constituents of concern include benzene, xylene, toluene, and ethylbenzene.
j These constitluents can cause skin and eye irritation,as well as respiratory problems, fatigue, and
j nausea. Target organs include the central nervous system, respiratory system, and bone marrow.
: Again, the potential for inhalation.of vapors is low so exposure to these constituents should be
minimal.
3
Physical Hazards
The physical hazards at this site include working around the drill rig, noise, cold stress and
traffic. When working near the drill rig employees must be aware of moving parts. Before
approaching the drill rig ba sure to make eye contact with the operator to ensure that he knows that
f you are approaching. Also,be careful when the drillers a,e changing augers or moving other
equipment. If the station is still in operation,be aware of traffic coming into and out of the station.
The drivers will not be looking for you.
Noise levels may be loud depending the
i p g on type of drill rig and the distance from the drill rig.
Normally,if you are standing two feet away from somebody and you must raise your voice to
speak to him or her, then the noise levels are probably loud enough to warrant using hearing --
-- _..-_.protection. - — —---------- _._.._ -- - -- --- --Cold stress may be a problem if the field activities takelace in the winter months. Be sure to
s(included in't
- follow the guidelines for controlling cold strespltis lan).
W
i
F
at ;
