F
.5
unique to that sample. This information, in addition to a descrip-
tion of the sample, field measurements made, sampling methodology,
names of on-site personnel, and any other pertinent field observa-
tions, will be recorded on the boring log or in the field records.
A chain-of-custody card (Figure 2) will be used to record
possession of the sample from time of collection to its arrival at
the laboratory. The sample control officer at the laboratory will
verify sample integrity and confirm that it was collected in the
proper container , preserved correctly, and that there is an adequate
volume of analysis. If these conditions are met, the sample will be
assigned a unique log number for identification throughout analysis
and reporting. The log number will be recorded on the chain-of-
custody card and in the legally required log book BC maintains at the
laboratory. The sample description, date received , client ' s name,
and any other relevant information will also be recorded.
Laboratory Analytical Quality Assurance . In addition to routine
calibration of the instruments with standards and blanks , the analyst
is required to run duplicates and spikes on 10 percent of the
analyses to ensure an added measure of precision and accuracy.
Accuracy is also verified through the following:
1. Certification by California Department of Health Services.
2. Participation in interlaboratory or round-robin programs.
3. "Blind" samples are submitted by the laboratory 's quality
assurance officer on a weekly basis . These are prepared from
National Bureau of Standards or U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency reference standards.
Safety Program
It is important that the on-site safety program be designed to
protect the worker from direct skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion
of potentially hazardous materials that may be encountered at the
site. It should also familiarize the worker with appropriate first
aid procedures in the event of a harmful exposure . In order to do
this, the potentially hazardous properties of the materials and their
toxic effects must be understood . Brown and Caldwell has reviewed
the results of prior chemical analyses performed on samples obtained
from the similar sites. This information was used to develop the
following site safety pian for this work.
Personnel Protection. The personnel protection plan for this
project is designed to prevent sampling personnel from exposure to
petroleum hydrocarbons which might be encountered on site .
