As we discussed last March, your assistance
in assessing this matter is greatly appreciated.
This letter briefly summarizes the events surrounding the ammonia nitrate spill which
occurred on February 14, 1994, at the location referenced above. The attached Public
Health Services-Environmental Health Division (PHS-EHD) sampling report and FGL
Environmental analytical results have been provided for your use in evaluating this case
and any possible impacts to the surrounding groundwater.
In addition to the PHS-EHD sample results from FGL Environmental, Mr. David Hegarty,
whose residence is adjacent to the spill location, has submitted his domestic well analysis
for nitrate (84ppm), obtained three days after the spill. He was unable to locate any prior
sampling results for his well. Mr. Hegarty is currently drinking bottled water, however,
any recommendations you can provide regarding his well would also be appreciated.
Additionally, Mr. Hegarty's consultant excavated and obtained soil samples from his
property which have not been submitted to this office, but may be submitted in the future.
If PHS-EHD receives these documents, they will be forwarded to you to include in your
evaluation.
On February 14, 1994, approximately 1,500 gallons of liquid fertilizer, UAN 32, was spilled
on the southeast corner of North Ripon Road and River Road near Ripon, California.
