21800 NORTH RIPON ROAD AND RIVER ROAD, RIPON, CA.
SAMPLING REPORT
MARCH 25, 1994
On March 24, 1994, Eleanor Ratliff, Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist
(REHS), and Michael Kith, Senior REHS, met with Mark Brock and Pat Wheeler of FGL,
an environmental laboratory, at the above referenced site to obtain soil samples. Soil
sampling was performed as a result of an ammonia nitrate spill which occurred on
February 14, 1994.
The location of the spill was on the southeast corner of North Ripon Road and River Road
in Ripon, CA. The area had been previously excavated to remove top soil contaminated
with high amounts of the fertilizer. The possibility of residual contamination left in place
compelled this investigation.
Nine soil samples were taken by FGL field representatives, Mark Brock and Pat Wheeler.
The samples were obtained by advancing a "Ground Hog Earth Auger" with a solid stem,
30" bit, to a depth of three feet. A six-inch brass tube was then used to collect an
undisturbed sample from the native soil. Sample #'s 1-6 were drilled very near the
roadside at a 45 degree angle to collect a sample beneath the road which was lateral to the
spill. Sample #7 and #9 were drilled at a 90 degree angle to the ground to a depth of
three and four feet, respectively. Sample #8 was drilled south of the spill area along North
Ripon Road at a depth of three feet. This sample will serve as a representative background
sample.
All nine samples were immediately sealed with teflon, capped, labeled, and placed in a
chilled cooler for transport, under chain of custody, to FGL, a California State Certified
Laboratory. The samples are to be analyzed for ammonia nitrate and nitrate.
During drilling and sampling, careful measurements were taken to insure that
representative locations were chosen. A map was drawn with these locations noted.
Photographs were taken using reference points to document the sampling locations. (See
map and photos enclosed.)
A slight ammonia odor was detected from the cuttings of borehole #4 and #6. The
ammonia odor quickly dissipated.
Report prepared by: Eleanor Ratliff, Senior REHS
March 25, 1994
