Report of Results
Investigation of Agricultural Chemicals in Soil
PureGroBrea Facility I
a
1905 North Broadway Ave.,Stockton,CA 11"
Sierra-Pacific Project No.94-055.09 0 o
3.0 rREVIOUS IIYVESTIGAT ONS AND SITE ASSESSMENTS
Historical records indicate that limited soil sampling programs have been completed at the former
PureGroBrea facility. Previous environmental investigative work was initiated by former and current
operators to determine if pesticides and fertilizer products were present in soils near product loading
areas, former evaporation ponds, and aboveground storage tanks. Potential areas of concern were
referenced in a March 12, 1997 letter from RWQCB, and were also identified by site observations,
employee interviews, or identified product releases (see Figure 3). The areas of concern include two
former unlined evaporation ponds (referred to hereinafter as the north and south ponds), a former
underground storage tank,an abandoned oil/water separator, three dry wells,a former tank farm and mix
plant area, a former wash rack area, a drum storage area, a paint booth, and the current wash rack area.
In 1981 Union Oil Company analyzed the sludge from the north pond on the Brea(northerly) portion
of the current site. Nitrogen concentrations ranged from 34,000 to 95,000 milligrams per kilogram
(mg/kg). In 1985 Brea Agricultural (Brea) collected soil samples from four locations within the south
pond, located in the PureGro(southerly)portion of the site. Pesticides including Ethion and Endosulfan,
the nematode fumigant DBCP,and DDE,a by-product of breakdown of the insecticide DDT were found
in soil south of the mix plant/tank farm area(Figure 3), at concentrations of less than I mg/kg. The soil
west of the fumigant area had the herbicides Diuron,Linuron, and the pesticides Endosulfan, DDT and
its breakdown by-product DDE,endrin aldehyde, and endosulfan sulfate, again all at concentrations less
than 1 mg/kg.
In 1987, 1,2-DCP was detected in water samples collected at two East Stockton water supply wells.
RWQCB briefly investigated the PureGroBrea facility but found no 1,2-DCP in the production well at
the Brea site. RWQC-P reports that in 1989 an underground storage tank, presumably a fuel tank, was
removed from the site, but RWQCB does not have a report of this removal- In 1990,during construction
i of the new tank farm, an abandoned oillwater separator and three dry wells were found. Soil samples
were collected from a test pit. 1,2-DCP and petroleum hydrocarbon compounds (TPH) were detected.
i
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. 4
i
