02 November 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 99-0628
4.0. SHALLOW DISPOSAL WELL CLOSURE AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES
_ Each dry well was excavated using a truck-mounted drill rig and 48-inch long bucket-type auger. The
auger was advanced by rotating into each dry well. After filling the bucket with soil cuttings, the
bucket was lifted from the well and the soil released onto a temporary soil stockpile. This process
was repeated until the bottom of each well was encountered at approximately 26 feet. Boring B-1
was advanced using hollow-stem auger drilling techniques.
4.1. SOIL SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Relatively undisturbed soil samples were collected from beneath the bottom of each dry well and
boring B-1 using a California modified split-spoon sampler fitted with 2-inch diameter, 6-inch long
brass sleeves. Upon removal from the sampler. the sample sleeves were separated and the exposed
ends of the first sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Additionally,
soil sample duplicates were field screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an
organic vapor meter (OVM).
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with the dry well
identification number, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. The samples were then placed in a
chilled container under ice for and transported under chain-of-custody to a California Department
of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory.
4.2. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools used for sample collection were rinsed with clean water after being washed with
a solution of Alconox.
4.3. BORING ABANDONMENT
Each excavated dry well was permanently sealed to prevent vertical migration of contaminants by
backfilling with cement slurry from the total depth to approximately 3 feet bsg. Boring B-1 was
backfilled with cement from total depth to surface grade.
4.4. LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Three dry well samples, one discharge line sample and two composite stockpiled soil samples were
Advanced GeoEnvironmental.Inc.
