21 July 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 99-0604
Page 4 of 6
decontamination and sample shipment are as follows.
3.1. SOIL SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The soil boring will be advanced using hollow-stem auger drilling techniques.Relatively undisturbed
soil samples will be collected in all borings using a California modified split-spoon sampler fitted
with 2-inch diameter, 6-inch long brass sleeves. Upon removal from the sampler,the sample sleeve
will be separated with a clean knife. The exposed ends of the second sleeve will be covered with
Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Each soil sample will be labeled with boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials following sample collection. Soil samples will be placed in
a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-custody to a DHS-certified laboratory.
Soils encountered in the borings will be visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with
the Unified Soil Classification System(USCS).Additionally,soil samples will be field screened for
the presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter equipped with a photo-
ionization detector(PID:Thermo Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV,calibrated to isobutylene).The field
data will be recorded on logs for each boring.
3.2. IN-SITU GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
For the collection of depth-discrete ground water samples, soil borings will be advanced to the top
of the ground water table as identified by collection of a saturated soil sample and confirmed by
water levels in existing monitoring wells in site. Once ground water has been encountered, a
disposable bailer will be placed down the center of the augers to collect water. Samples will be
collected into:
• Four 40 ml VOA vials with 0.5-m1 hydrochloric acid as sample preservative for TPH-g,
BTEX, VOCs and SVOCs;
• One I-liter amber bottle for TPH-d;
• One ''/z-gallon plastic bottle for total metals; and
• One 500 ml plastic bottle, without preservatives, for hexavalent chromium and pH.
The labeled sample containers will be placed under ice in a chilled container and transported under
chain-of-custody to a DHS-certified laboratory.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
