QUARRY <br /> INVESTIGATION REPORT <br /> SLAB-1 SITE <br /> PAGE 4 <br /> in clean brass tubes, capped, sealed with Teflon tape, wrapped with duct tape, labeled, and <br /> immediately place in a cooler chilled with "blue ice", for immediate delivery under Chain-of- <br /> Custody procedure to GeoAnalytical Laboratories in Modesto, California. <br /> 4.0 LABORATORY ANALYSIS <br /> As described in the Work Plan, potentially contaminated materials encountered during the <br /> reclamation operations can be analyzed by the following methods, for the following general <br /> groups of contaminants: <br /> • Suspected or apparent petroleum hydrocarbons in soil <br /> Soil samples will be analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene & xylene (BTEX) by <br /> EPA Method 8020, for total petroleum hydrocarbons, quantified as gasoline (TPH-G) by <br /> Method 5030/LUFT, and total extractable hydrocarbons, quantified as diesel, kerosene <br /> and motor oil (TEPH) by Method 3550/LUFT. <br /> • Unknown compounds <br /> Unknown compounds can often be very difficult to identify if there is no indication of <br /> the type of contamination. Laboratory procedures are set up to analyze for <br /> concentrations of particular compounds, not to determine what type of unknown <br /> compound is present. Field screening and indications of prior site activities in the <br /> particular location where the contamination is encountered, therefore, will be used to <br /> determine which laboratory tests should be performed. Likely laboratory testing of soil <br /> samples that could be performed for screening purposes include analyses for detectable <br /> concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons (solvents) by EPA Method 8010, and semi- <br /> volatile organics by EPA Method 8270. <br /> Testing for potential toxicity of the soil sample is another approach to determine if the <br /> potential contamination encountered is a hazardous. According to Title 22 of the <br /> California Code, materials can be identified as hazardous by a toxicity test. The toxicity <br /> test procedures described in Title 22, Section 66261.24, referred to as the LC50 method <br /> _ (bioassay); would be used in this case. <br /> The potentially contaminated soil encountered in the area of Slab-1 was analyzed using the <br /> methods described above. Sample results are included in Table 1, and laboratory test reports <br /> and Chain-of-Custody documentation are attached in Appendix A. Companion samples of those <br /> analyzed are being held at the laboratory. <br /> i� CONDOR <br />
