Soil samples were taken at 5 , 10 and 15 feet
in the monitoring wall, at 3 and 8 feet in B-3 , and at 4 or 5 feet
in the remaining wells. Three days later the monitoring well was
developed by extracting 25 gallons of groundwater. A water sample
was then taken.
The soil and groundwater samples were then analyzed for TEPH
(total extracted petroleum hydrocarbons) and HTEX (benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes) . According to the
analytical laboratory, the TEPH test serves to screen for both
crude oil and the diesel fractions.
The laboratory test results are attached. The only
contamination found in the soil samples was traces of xylenes,
found in the examples taken from the western half of the site.
Although crude oil was not found in the water sample, levels of
diesel fuel and all tour of the BTEX fractions ware found.
According to David Jenkins of the Region 5 State Regional Water
Quality Control Soalyd, the so-called "action levels" for his agency
for diesel and benzene contaminations are loo and 4 . 5 parte per
billion, respsctively. our test results for the isiater sample
indicates contamination levels above these action levels (ug/L
ppb - parte par billion) . The tests were run twice in order to
obtain a batter level of certainty.
.AM.
