File No. A7-1909`-JI November 3, 1987
1
DESCRIPTION OF TEST PROCEDURES
The following laboratory tests were performed on selected samples of the
various soil strata encountered in the iest borings, to determine their
physical characteristics pertinent to geotechnical aspects of the proposed
Fill development. Tests performed were selectec on the basis of the probable final
;;. design requirements, correlated to the SitE subsoil profile, as determined by
the logs of the test borings and the site geology. A short general
l ..
description of the tests performed, including a brief discussion of the
purpose of each test, is -given as follows:
i 1
.J A. Moisture-Density (ASTM D2937) : Conducted on undisturbed soil
samples, to determine their in-situ moisture contents and dry unit
weights. These tests aids in determining general soil conditions
is and properties. See the Logs of the Test Borings (Appendix A, pages
A346) , and Table I (Appendix B, page B3) .
B. Atterber.gLimitsASTM D424-71).: Conducted on two disturbed bag a
- soil sample, to determine their liquid limits and plastic index
values. This test provides- water content values for the sample's
liquid and plastic phases. The test aids in determining the
ti . expansive characteristics of the soil tested. See Table II
(Appendix B, page B4) .
t
C. Sieve Analysis (ASTM 422-63) : Conducted on one soil sample, to
determine the coarse fraction grain size distribution of the soil
sample. This test aids in . determining the soil classification,
general engineering properties of the samples, and assists in
determining the potential for liquefaction.
