California St.
Stockton, CA
San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)
has reviewed the Quarterly Monitoring and CPT Preliminary Report dated December 17,
1999 prepared by Foothill Engineering for the above referenced site. Soil and
groundwater samples continue to evidence contamination at this site. Further
investigative work will be necessary to define the lateral extent of contamination and to
evaluate the groundwater.
CPT borings evidence soil contamination down to 85 feet below surface grade (bsg).
Groundwater samples collected from 85 feet bsg in CPT2 evidence Benzene at 765 parts
per billion (ppb), Toluene at 32 ppb, Ethlybenzene at 400 ppb, Xylene at 2,300 ppb, and
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline at 6,400 ppb. The deepest Monitoring Wells
(MWs) at this site are screened from 40 feet to 60 feet bsg. Additional MWs should be
installed to evaluate contaminated groundwater below 60 feet bsg. Also, PHS/EHD
recommends the installation of additional MWs to determine the lateral extent of
contamination at this site.
Conduct a complete well survey of domestic, municipal, agricultural, industrial and any
other wells within a 2,000 foot radius of this site. Contact the Department of Water
Resources, municipal water suppliers and nearby industries for well information.
Perform a physical search of the area to identify any wells. Show the locations of all
wells and submit any known construction details of the wells. Identify all sources of
information in the well survey report and clearly depict each well location as they relate
to the above referenced site. Discuss conclusions regarding public and environmental
health risks as they relate to the pumping influence of these identified wells and the
migration and potential impact of the contaminant plume.
A Well Survey Report and Work Plan to determine the lateral extent of
contamination and further evaluate the groundwater at this site should be
submitted to PHS/EHD by March 1,2000. When the contaminant plume has been
defined, feasibility tests should be conducted in order to compare at least two different
remediation alternatives.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
