CLEARWATER
• G R Q U P, I N C.
CLEARWATER FIELD PROCEDURES
Well Installation, Soil Sampling, Well Development and
Groundwater Sampling
Drilling and Soil Sampling, =
Prior to drilling, Clearwater Group,'Inc. (CGI) will obtain-all necessary permits
and also locate All underground :. and- above ground -utilities through
Underground Service Alert.(USA) and thorough site inspection. All drilling
equipment will be inspected daily and-will be-maintained in safe operating
condition.
All borings will be drilled using a truck-mounted hollow-stern auger drill rig, _
unless site conditionswarrant a different drilling method.. All down-hole
drilling. equipment will be steam cleaned prior. to arriving.ori-site, to prevent
the introduction of contaminants from off-site.. . Working components of the
drill rig near the borehole, as well as augers and drill rods will be:thoroughly
steam. cleaned between each boring location. All 'drilling and sampling
methods will be consistent with ASTM Method D-1452-80 and local, state and
federal regulations.
Soil samples are typically collected every 5 feet using brass tubes fitted in a
California-modified split spoon sampler. If copper or zinc contamination is
the subject of the investigation, stainless steel liners.will be used instead of
brass. - Additional soil samples may be collected based upon significant
changes in lithology or in areas of obvious soil contamination. . For sample
collection, the split spoon sampler is driven 18 to 24 inches-past the lead auger
by a 140-pound hammer falling a minimum of 30 inches. The number of
Iblows necessary to drive the sampler and the amount of soil recovered will be
recorded on the field exploratory soil boring log. The soil sampler and-liners
will be cleaned with an Alconox solution and rinsed with tap water prior to
each sampling event.
Soil removed from the top two liners Will-be used for lithologic descriptions
I (according to the unified soil classification system) and for organic vapor field
analysis... Organic vapors will be analyzed in the field by placing in a plastic
bag or glass jar approximately. 30 grams of soil. from an undisturbed soil
sample. The bag or jar will'be sealed and warmed for approximately 20
minutes, then pierced. The head space in the bag will be tested. for total
1
CLEARWATER GROUP, MC.
