V NUM4
Interim Remedial Action Work Plan
1405 California Street,Escalon,California
with plastic end caps, labeled with sample and project identification numbers, and placed directly
in iced storage for delivery to the environmental laboratory. The soil samples will be listed on a
chain of custody record and submitted to the laboratory for chemical analyses.
Stockpile Characterization
Soil generated during the excavation work will be characterized by a sample collection and
laboratory analysis program. Soil sample composites will be collected from the soil stockpile at a
rate of one composite of four individual soil samples for every 50 cubic yards of stockpiled soil.
Each individual soil sample will be collected by first removing approximately one foot of soil from
the surface of the pile and then driving a clean sample sleeve through the freshly exposed surface.
Each soil sample will be sealed, labeled, and handled in the same manner as described above.
Laboratory Analytical Work
Each soil sample and sample composite collected at the site will be analyzed by California
Laboratory Services, Inc., of Rancho Cordova, California, for total petroleum hydrocarbons in the
ranges of gasoline and diesel fuel using EPA method 8015 modified; and for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, total xylene isomers, and methyl t-butyl ether using EPA method 8020 with purge and
trap EPA method 5030.
Report Preparation
A written report describing the field operations and summarizing the results of the laboratory
analyses will be prepared and submitted to the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division
for review. The report will also include an illustration depicting the approximate locations of the
soil samples collected at the site during the overexcavation of the former fuel dispenser island area.
Time Schedule and Quality Assurance
We plan to begin the soil excavation work on July 15, 1997, and anticipate collecting soil samples
at 11:00 am that same day. All work will be conducted in a manner consistent with generally
accepted methods in the field of environmental engineering and hydrogeology. If you have any
questions regarding this Interim Remedial Action Work Plan, do not hesitate to call our office.
Sincerely,
5ED GED
Grayland Environmental
 4. REV 0
No.5597
Jeffrey A.
