APPENDIX C
' MASS OF PETROLEUM HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
EMIL'S LIQUORS
1405 California Street, Escalon, California
' C.0, FORMULAS AND METHODS
The area of lateral extent of impacted soil was determined from Figure 7; vertical thickness was
determined from cross section A-A' (Figure 4). Soil concentration was based on the highest TPH-g
value of 100 mg/kg, from sample HA-1-7.5. Calculated volume and mass were rounded for
' presentation on tables. Calculations were performed to a minimum of two decimal places.
Calculations:
' Volume Determination: (Highest Concentration of 100 mg/kg)
' Assuming that the volume of TPH-impacted soil can be approximated by a spherical shape:
Volume = 4/3 n R'
' Where R equals approximately 5 feet ('/2 diameter of approximately 10 feet)
The volume of impacted soil is calculated to be 523 cubic feet (ft')
' Mass Determination:
The mass of TPH in soil is derived by converting the volume of TPH-impacted soil to weight, then
multiplying the weight by the ratio of TPH to soil. The density of soil is approximately 120 lb/ft'.
Assuming the concentration of TPH in soil is 100mg/kg, or 0.000 1, then:
Mass of TPH = Vo x 120 lb/ft' x 0.Oil = 6.28 lb
sz-Sf"'
TPH Volume:
The volume of petroleum hydrocarbons is determined using a conversion factor of 6.25 lb per gallon
for gasoline, or 7.0 lbs per gallon for diesel:
E.g., Volume of TPH-g= TPH-g (lb) 6.25 lb = 1.0 gallon
Additional Conversion Factors:
27 ft' = Iyd'
1 yd' soil = I.69 tons
1 kg = 2.2046 lbs
• 1 gallon gasoline = 6.25 lbs
1 gallon #2 diesel = 7.00 lbs
Advanced GeoEnvironmentai,Inc.
