California St.
Stockton, CA., 95204
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, En ironmental Health Division (PHS-EHD),
has reviewed the recently submitted work plan aid has the following comments.
Typical groundwater investigation and assessments require at least three (3) monitoring
wells to be placed so that the groundwater gradi nt and direction can be determined. In
conversations with your consultant, Ervin Rifenb irg, PHS-EHD has learned that
proposed MW-3 and MW-4 may not be installed if MW-2's installation indicates that the
groundwater is not contaminated. PHS-EHD wil I require the placement of the three
(3) additional monitoring wells as proposed i the work plan.
Your consultant's proposal to place monitoring wells with screened intervals twenty-five
(25) feet long is unacceptable. Screened intervE Is for monitoring wells shall not be
greater than twenty (20) feet long_
In order to collect repeated groundwater sample at the deepest soil-groundwater
interface recorded (75 'bgs), PHS-EHD will requ re the screened interval to extend into
the most permeable soil layer just past this depth. If this well screen does not intersect
the current soil-groundwater interface, an additic nal monitoring well casing that will
intersect the current soil I groundwater interface should be added to the bore hole_
Otherwise, another well should be placed very close to this well that will have a
screened interval that will overlap the current soil I groundwater interface. Please
ensure that your consultant and drilling contractor are prepared to place multiple
casings or additional wells if the situation in the field requires it.
PHS-EHD selected soil samples collected from tie monitoring well borehole as well as
all of the groundwater samples are to be analyzed for Total Petroleum-Hydrocarbons
(TPH) as Gasoline and Stoddard Solvent, BTEX fChloririafed-Hydrocarbons', and the
fuel additives/oxygenates as listed in the enclosed policy dated September 25, 1997. If
it can be determined later that these constituenbs are not detected in the laboratory
analyses, their future analyses may not be requi ed,by=PHS-EHD.
A Division of San Joaquin Count Heafth Care Services
