i
Work Plan for Additional Assessment
ARCO Facility No.2186 A
Stockton_,California
Page 6
Task 5: Waste Management
All generated drill cuttings and excess soil samples will be stored on site, and placed onrand covered
with visqueen. A composite sample will be collected from the soil cuttings and will be analyzed to
determine an appropriate disposal method. Once the analytical results have been received, the
stockpile will be disposed of at a proper facility. Wastewater generated during the field activities will
be contained in Department of Transportation-approved, 55-gallon, steel drums. These drums will be
appropriately labeled and stored on site pending disposal.
VAPOR EXTRACTION FEASIBILITY TEST AND FEASIBILTY STUDY .:
Delta proposes to conduct a soil vapor extraction test to evaluate the technical feasibility of using
SVE as a remedial alternative to mitigate petroleum hydrocarbon impact to soil and groundwater.
The objective of the test is to evaluate, 1) the concentrations of petroleum, hydrocarbons in the soil
vapors extracted from the subsurface and 2)the radius of influence(ROI) of the extraction wells.
The site currently has three duel completed (one shallow and one deep) vapor extraction wells VW-1,
VW-2, and VW-3. The shallow wells are screened between 22 and 36 feet bgs and the deep wells
are screened between 42 and 61 feet bgs. The current depth to water at the site is approximately 34
to 35 feet bgs (2"d Quarter 2000). .Delta proposes to use the shallow vapor extraction wells for the
SVE test because the deep wells are submerged.
Prefield Activities
+ Notify the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District regarding the test and its
schedule.
+ Prepare wellhead modifications for the extraction and observation wells based on diameter of
the wells.
Field Activities
A SVE test will be conducted at each vapor extraction well to evaluate the petroleum hydrocarbon
content in the soil vapors in the vicinity of the wells. Delta anticipates the duration of each test to be
approximately 4 hours. ,
The first test will be conducted at vapor extraction well VW-1. The wellhead of the vapor extraction
well will be temporarily modified to apply vacuum and extract soil vapors. A trailer-mounted,
generator-operated, catalytic oxidizer, which includes a blower, will be used to apply vacuum and
extract soil vapors at the wellhead. The extracted soil vapors will be abated in the catalytic oxidizer
before discharging to the atmosphere,
Surrounding wells (VW-2. VW-3) will be retrofitted and used as observation wells. The observation
wells will monitor induced vacuum. The induced vacuum at the observation wells will be used to
determine the radius of influence.
1
i
