PRIMA Environmental, Inc. charms/4of7
Confidential December 9,2007
Secor—Circle K rip
Task 3. COC Removal
To confirm that hydrocarbons are removed, determine the amount of removal due to
destruction versus volatilization, and estimate the appropriate ozone dose, batch tests will
be conducted Five reactors containing site soil and groundwater will be prepared, then
allowed to mix in a closed container for about 60 minutes. One of the reactors will be
destructively sampled and analyzed for GRO,BTEX,MTBE,TBA,and TBF. This
reactor is the"time 0"reactor. Two of the reactors will be capped and mixed for the
duration of the test. These reactors are the controls. The remaining four reactors will be
sparged with ozone(--30 mg 03/1,air)at a flowrate of 50 mL/min. Off-gases will be
collected in Tedlaz bags. Periodically, one control and one 03 reactor will be
destructively sampled and the off-gases and aqueous phases analyzed for GRO,BTEX,
MTBE and TBA. The aqueous phase will also be analyzed for TBF. Soil will not be
analyzed due to the difficulty of sampling soil without losing significant hydrocarbons to
volatilization. The tests are summarized in Table 2.
Table 2. Tests to Evaluate Effect of Ozone on COC Removal
Test # Sparge Gas Est. Effect on Water Quality
The effect of ozone on secondary water quality will be assessed by analyzing the aqueous
phases from the tests in Table 2 for
- Bromate
- Bromide
- Cr(VI)
- Total Cr
- ORP
- pH
Task 5. Natural Attenuation of Cr(Vl)—if needed
If Cr(Vl)is formed during treatment with ozone, additional tests will be conducted to
assess whether these parameters can naturally attenuate. Tests will simulate attenuation
in the treatment zone as well as downgradient of the treatment zone. Cr(Vl)will be
measured colorimetrically by PRIMA Environmental using a Hach DR 2800
Spectrophotometer and appropriate test reagents. Tests will use treated soil and treated
groundwater from the high ozone dose test(s)in Task 3.
