Per your request Ground Zero
Analysis is conducting soil sampling of the additional soil
generated during leveling of the tank cavity on the afternoon of
April 11, 1995 and the morning of April 12, 1995. Ground Zero also
collected soil samples from the bottom of the leveled tank cavity
using a backhoe and submitted the samples for analysis. Ground
Zero conducted the soil sampling in your presence per your request.
Ground Zero's registered geologist was also present to conduct and
supervise the sampling.
Tri-regional guidelines for investigating leaking underground
storage tanks state that soil samples should be collected from the
side-walls of the excavation, and if the pit is dry from beneath the
tanks. If groundwater is encountered in the tank cavity the
guidelines state that sidewall samples and water samples should be
collected and analyzed. Very rarely are saturated soil samples
analyzed because of the difficulty in determining the validity of
the sampling results. The concerns you expressed about a possible
source of contamination existing beneath the tanks were valid,
however your suggested approach to investigate the matter is
unconventional. Nonetheless, Ground Zero, in the interest of
moving forward, is doing the suggested sampling, however we reserve
our right to discuss the application and validity of the soil
sample results and may need to schedule a meeting with you and your
supervisor upon her return.
r
Saerel
ReQ Zimmerman
TOTAL P.M
