PRELiMOIAR'Y SITE INVESTIGATION REPORT
ry GREYHO U?v'D'TERMINAL
STOCKTON,CALIFnRNIA
11WRODUCTION
This report describes the site assessment implemented at the Greyhound Lines,
Inc. (GLI' 1 erminal, 121 South Center Street, Stockton, California (Figures 1 and
2). The SCODe of work described was submitted to GLI in a letter proposal dated
August 16, !°91.
On September 16, 1991, a preliminary site assessment was initiated in
accordance with the approved Work Plan submitted to San Joaquin County Publt'c
Health Services, Environmental Health Division (SJCPHS/EHD). A total of five
soil borings were advanced. Soil samples from each boring were collected and
- analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPHD and TPHG) and benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) to define both the lateral and vertiad
extent of soil contamination. Three of the soil borings were converted to
monitoring wells to characterize hydrogeologic conditions and groundwater quality,
The wells were monitored for the presence of free product accumulation and depth
to groundwater, and groundwater samples were collected from each well for TPHD,
TPHG and BTEX analyses.
PROJECT BACKGROIJND
Greyhound Lines, Inc. (GLI) operates a passenger bus terminal at 121 South
- Center Street, Stockton, California(Figures 1 and 2). As part of passenger terminal
operation, Greyhound utilized and maintained one 12,000-gallon underground
diesel fuel storage tank for the purpose of refueling buses. In May, 1991, GLI
initiated removal of this undergrour_r!. fael storage tank (UFST) and associated
piping. Soil samples were collected to assess the potential for environmental
contamination associated with the normal operation of the UFST. Samples
collected at the base of the excavation contained TPHD concentration; as high as
4,200 mg/kg (TP-1, 14 feet below ground surface). In addition, soil samples
^ collected from beneath the piping contained TPHD at concentrations which ranged
between non-detect and 11,000 mg/kg(P-S,2 feet below ground surface). Based on
these analytical results and the recommendations outlined in the State of California,
} Leaking Underground Fuel Tank (LUFT) Manual 1989, San Joaquin County
PHS/EP-D) requested additional investigations at the site to assess the extent and
magnitude of soil and/or groundwater contamination.
