Jim Allen •
Memo, Page 3
June 8, 1987
copper. In order to further assess this problem we have the following
recommendations:
1. These potential exposures need to be further characterized with respect
to extent of offsite contamination, and presence of more toxic
compounds such as arsenic trioxide and hexavalent chromium. This would
involve taking samples further from the Marley fenceline, particularly
in runoff areas such as the ditches, and examining soil in the school
yard which is adjacent to the site, and to which we did not have
access.
2. Areas with significant offsite contamination will need to be cleaned
UP. (It is not possible to estimate with available data how extensive
this offsite cleanup will need to be.) Your Technical Services Section
should be consulted about guidelines for offsite cleanup.
3. Additionally, it may be wise to look at any data you have that
regarding runoff water from the site, to ensure that these data are
adequate to ensure that movement of heavy metals offsite is not
continuing to occur.
4. At this point in time we would not recommend medical or epidemiological
studies of nearby residents. We would like to be kept informed of the
results of any additional offsite sampling that is done, in order to
continually assess the need for any investigations of this type.
cc: Robert Schlag, M.S. , COMTU, HES
Bart Simmons, HML
David Siegel, Ph.D. , HWU, ESSS
David Morrey, Ph.D. , HWU, ESSS
Tony Landis, NCS, TSCD
Raymond R.
