SECTION 3
TECHNICAL APPROACH
The soil sampling and boring program will be addressed in a
two-phased approach which is necessitated by the ongoing
dewatering program at the facility. The scheduled completion for
the dewatering of the pond is currently projected to take place
on or about April 1, 1988 . Access to the basin portion of the
pond area will be a directly related to the success of the
dewatering program, and may have a greater impact on the second
phase of the sampling program due to the need for drill rig
access.
PHASE I - SEDIMENT, SURFACE AND SHALLOW SOIL SAMPLES
The first phase of the soil sampling program is limited to the
collection and analysis of soils and sediments present on the
surface and in the upper layers of the pond berm and basin areas.
rThe proposed sampling program will involve collection of surface
samples using a hand collection device and collection of
rsubsurface samples using a small hand driven sampling device
(hand auger or split spoon sampler) . All tools will be
decontaminated between samples (see: DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES) .
r
The top layer of sediments present in the basin and on each of
the four pond berms will be collected and logged as sediment
samples to differentiate them from the surface samples .
r
GMI
r
