During the pilot study (Phase II) , ground water samples will be collected
from neutron probe monitoring tubes MT-1 , MT-3, and MT-5. These samples
will be collected at the beginning, middle, and end of the pilot study
activities. A ground water sample will also be collected from MW-206 (an
existing extraction well that will be used for both the pilot and full-
scale systems) at end of the pilot study activities. Filtered and
unfiltered ground water samples will be analyzed for arsenic, copper,
hexavalent chromium, and total chromium. Field measurements of pH,
temperature, total dissolved solids, and specific conductance will also be
recorded for each ground water sample.
During operation of the full-scale flushing system (Phase IV) , ground
water samples will be collected from the neutron probe monitoring tubes,
two existing piezometers, and the extraction wells (MW-206, MW-214 and EW-
2) on a quarterly basis. The filtered and unfiltered groundwater samples
will be analyzed for arsenic, copper, hexavalent chromium, total chromium,
and total dissolved solids. Field measurements of pH, temperature, total
dissolved solids, and specific conductance will also be recorded for each
ground water sample.
Hargis and Associates, Inc. (Hargis) is currently monitoring water levels
and collecting ground water samples from monitoring wells and piezometers
at MCTC' s facility. MCTC and Black & Veatch will continue to receive the
Hargis results throughout all four phases of the flushing project. These
results will provide additional data concerning contaminant concentrations
in the vicinity of the retort pit.
3.2.3 Lysimeter Sampling
During the Phase II pilot study activities, pore water samples will be
collected from L-242,243,244. One sample will be collected at the
beginning and end of the pilot study. The concurrent lysimeter sampling
by Kleinfelder may be substituted for• either pilot study sampling event,
if Kleinfelder' s sampling schedule coincides within two weeks of the pilot
study lysimeter sampling.
During the Phase IV full-scale flushing system operation, Kleinfelder will
continue to collect pore water samples from all the operational lysimeters
(L-242,243,244, L-246,247,248, L-301,302, and L-303,304) located in the
vicinity of the retort pit area. Lysimeter samples will be collected
quarterly and will be submitted for arsenic, copper, hexavalent chromium,
and total chromium analysis.
3.3 SAMPLE MANAGEMENT
3.3.1 Sample Packaging and Shipment
Immediately after water and soil samples are obtained, the sample label
will be completed with the sample date, sample number, sampler's initials,
and analyses to be performed. The sample date, sample number and
sampler' s name will be filled in on the sample seal and the seal affixed
on the sample container so that it covers the container cap. The sample
will be preserved as required and placed in a shipping container or a
cooler with ice to keep the sample cool (4°C).
11654.652 3-4
