Page 3
Mr Michael Infwna Jr
August 1, 1997
INVESTIGATION WORKPLAN
Soil and groundwater samples will be collected beneath the former UST
excavation with a Geoprobe-type sampling device Two 1-inch diameter
probeholes will be hydraulically driven through the approximate locations where
soil samples STK-1N and STK-1 S were collected in December 1990 (see Figure
2) Soil samples will be collected at 5-foot intervals from a depth of 10 feet below
the ground surface to the estimated depth of groundwater at 35 feet In addition,
one"grab" groundwater sample will be collected at one of the probehole locations
through the Geoprobe rod string using either a peristaltic pump or a small
diameter bailer
Upon collection, the samples will be field-screened with a photoionization
detector(PID), logged by a Philip geologist, placed in an appropriate container,
and prepared for shipping to West Analytical Laboratories in Davis, California for
analysis Analyses will include TPH-G and BTEX compounds using USEPA
Method 8015M and Method 8020, respectively
Geoprobe equipment will be properly cleaned between sampling events to limit
the potential for cross contamination Wastes generated during the investigation
will be stored pending arrangements for proper disposal
Following receipt of analytical results, a site investigation report will be submitted
to you containing a description of field activities, observations, geologic logs, PID
measurements, laboratory reports, and conclusions This report will be signed by a
California-registered geologist
CLOSING
Responsibility regarding the UST operated at this property is presently in dispute
Providing this workplan at this time does not constitute any admission or denial of
any liability by The Earthgrains Company However,The Earthgrains Company
does recognize the need to address your concerns and that the current dispute be
resolved It is Philip's understanding that resolution of responsibility is presently
being negotiated between The Earthgrams Company and the current property
owner, and that it is the aim of all the parties involved to perform this preliminary
site investigation and ultimately attain case closure
