The Well Permit Application is being submitted following Central
Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) approval of the Work Plan for
Further Delineation of Groundwater Petroleum Hydrocarbon Plume, The Transmission
Shop, Stockton, California.
Minor changes to well drilling has been planned in response to recommendations from
the drilling subcontractor. Due to the limited size of the site, the use of air rotary drill
rigs is not feasible. Therefore a hollow stem auger rig will be used to complete not only
the 1 shallow and 3 intermediate wells, but also to complete the 2 deep wells. The
procedure for the two deep wells is as follows.
Each deep well will be bored to 70 feet below ground surface (bgs)through the use of a
nominal 14-inch (o.d.) hollow stem auger. Permanent mild steel conductor casing will be
welded and installed concurrently. Upon attaining 70 feet bgs the permanent conductor
casing will be grouted in place. The grout will be allowed to set for a minimum of 24
hours. Following grout set up a nominal 8-inch auger will be used to drill within the
conductor casing and will be driven to a total depth of 90 feet bgs. Each well will then be
constructed as outlined in the work plan.
The use of permanent conductor casing will prevent the potential migration of
contaminants in the vertical direction. The only variation from the Work Plan is that this
approach will use hollow stem auger drilling methods instead of air rotary drilling
methods. Again, the limited size of the site precluded the use of an air rotary drilling rig.
