! I
I
I
06 April 2009
AGE-NC Project No. 02-0962
I
3.2. SOIL-GAS SAMPLING LEAK DETECTION
AGE proposes to utilize 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) as a leak detection tracer '.
compound to ensure that a reliable soil-gas sample is collected from each soil boring with no
ambient air breakthrough down the probe rod. AGE will apply an appropriate amount of rubbing
alcohol (approximately 8 ounces) to adequately wet a cotton towel; the wetted towel will be
completely wrapped around the base of the probe rod where it contacts the surface and the bentonite
seal. Thereafter,a soil-gas sample will be collected as described in Section 3.1.
Utilization of isopropyl alcohol as a leak detection method was referenced in Technical and
Regulatory Guidance, Vapor Intrusion Pathway:A Practical Guideline, prepared by the Interstate
Technology&Regulatory Council(January 2007).
3.3. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water after being
washed with a solution of Alconox. All down-hole drilling and sampling equipment will be pressure
washed prior to starting the boring. All rinseate generated during drilling activities will be
containerized in properly labeled DOT-approved 55-gallon drums, and was stored on-site in an area
lacking public access.
3.4. BOILING ABANDONMENT
Following collection of soil-gas vapor samples, each bo-ehole will be filled to the ground surface
with a Portland type H cement grout. The grout mixture w ll consist ofType I/II portland neat cement
and not more than 6 gallons of water per 94-pound sackof cement. The SJCEHD will be given the
opportunity to inspect the grout mix prior to backfilling activities.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
