 s - . ", , wF•.. y"" -4 .was/a, r w' „ b .
k4iI:LEINFELDER
. 2 BACKGROUND
The Nomellini Construction facility is at 1045 West Charter Way, Stockton, California
(Plate 1). On August 25, 1988, a 550-gallon waste eil tank was excavated and two 1,000
gallon fuel tanks (containing regular and unleaded gasoline) were excavated from a
separate site. The tank reported to ,store unleaded gasoline may also have held kerosene.
Analytical results of soil samples collected beneath the tanks indicated that petroleum
hydrocarbons and gasoline related constituents were present in the soil beneath the two
1,000 gallon tanks. Constituents were detected below levels of concern in the sample
collected beneath the waste oil tank. Results of this investigation were presented ;n a
Kleinfelder report dated September 22, 1988.
On November 9, 1988 additional soil was removed from the fuel tanks;excavation to further
assess the extent of petroleum hydrocarbon. contamination. One section of the excavation
bottom was advanced from a depth of 11 feet to 19 feet below the ground surface. Soil
samples were qualitatively screened in the field with an organic vapor detector. Organic
_ vapor readings were detected at 408 parts per million by volume (ppmv) from a sample
collected at a depth of 19 feet within the excavation and 740 ppmv from a sample collected .
10 feet away from the excavation at a depth of 16 feet. Based on the positive organic vapor
truction decided to backfill the excavation and further
screening results, Nomellir i Cons
assess the extent of contamination with a soil boring program.
Nomellini Construction authorized Kleinfelder to conduct a preliminary investigation to
assess the lateral and vertical extent of contamination in the vicinity of the removed storage
tanks. A work plan to conduct the assessment was submitted to the SMID in November
_ of 1988, and an approved boring permit was received from the SJLHD on January,26, 1989
{Appendix A). This report describes the field activities and analytical results associated
with the preliminary soil investigation.
188-89-960 2
