I Well
r.
k4 KLEINFELDER
3 SCOPE OF WORK
This work plan presents a scope of work to collect soil samples from nine radial borings,
and install and sample three onsite ground water monitoring wells. Soil and water samples
from the borings and wells will be analyzed to assess petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination.
3.1 DRILLING OF SOIL BORINGS AND SAMPLING
A series of soil borings will be drilled along lines radiating away from the fuel tank(s)
excavation in an attempt to assess the vertical and horizontal extent of soil contamination.
The initial soil boring for each radial line will be placed at approximately 10 to 20 feet
away from the excavation. Soil samples will be collected at 5 foot intervals starting at a
dept,1x of 5 feet below the ground surface down to just above the ground water surface
(approximately 20 to 25 feet below the ground surface). If the presence of petroleum
hydrocarbons is indicated in the initial soil boring, the next soil boring will be drilled 10 to
20 feet further away from the excavation along each radial line. The soil borings will be
drilled at 10 to 20 foot intervals along each radial until a soil boring is drilled in which
petroleurn hydrocarbons do not appear to be present. The proposed Iocations of the radial
borings are shown on the Boring Location Map(Plate 2).
._ The borings will be advanced with a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 6- or 8-inch
hollow, stem augers. During the drilling, an experienced environmental geologist will
classify the soil, collect samples, and log the boreholes. Soil samples will be collected at 5-
foot intervals to the bottom of each boring. Drill cuttings will be placed with the soil
removed from the tank excavation or contained in plastic.
Soi: samples will be collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately above the
sampling depth and then driving a Modified California Saitipler lined with three brass
tubed into the undisturbed soil. The sampler will then be removed from the bottom of the
boring and the bottom (third) tube sealed with teflon and tight fitting plastic caps. The
sealed tube will be immediately stored in an iced cooler. At the and of drilling operations,
select soil samples will be delivered, under chain-4-custody to a state/EPA certified
148-88.2109 3
