Box 6336
Stockton, CA 95206
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION FROM ABOVEGROUND STORAGE TANKS,
INDEPENDENT TRUCKING FACILITY, 1145 WEST CHARTER WAY,SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed the 17 October 1996 Soil Excavation Assessment Report prepared by Kleinfelder for the
work done near the former aboveground storage tanks (ASTs)at the Independent Trucking facility in
Stockton. The report details the excavation activities that were carried out by Independent Trucking (the
operators of the facility)to formally close two 10,000-gallon diesel ASTs that were in use since prior to
Independent Trucking's operation of the site. Approximately 1,400 cubic yards of contaminated soil
were excavated and removed from below the former ASTs.
Confirmation sampling shows that discharges from the diesel ASTs contaminated the soil to at least
20 feet below the ground surface(bgs). Confirmation sampling also shows that soil is contaminated with
an older diesel fuel and a weathered gasoline. Groundwater is currently approximately 23 feet bgs.
Preliminary sampling of groundwater directly downgradient of the former ASTs shows no detectable
concentrations of petroleum.
Monitoring wells in the area, including one well directly downgradient of the former ASTs (MW-6), are
being sampled on a quarterly basis by the owners of the Independent Trucking property and the
Nomellini property to the east. The last quarter of sampling from MW-6 showed no detectable
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons. After four consecutive quarters of sampling, we will
determine the need for Independent Trucking to do any further work regarding releases from the ASTs.
Based on the above information, it appears the remaining soil contamination in the AST excavation is not
contributing to groundwater contamination. Therefore, you may backfill the excavation with clean fill
and resurface the area.
If you have any questions, you may call me at(916)255-3077.
J L M.
