Charter Way, Stockton, CA
Dear Mr. Weiss;
On March 1, 1996, the site of the large magnetic anomaly detected
by the geophysical survey conducted on Feb. 6 was excavated by
Jim Thorpe Oil under my direction. The "large" anomaly turned
out to be a 201 length of ill diameter metal conduit which
terminated about 2 feet east of monitoring well #1 . It was about
1211 below ground level, and appeared to extend beneath the shop
building. It had a threaded nipple on the west end, and there
was no indication that it continued in that direction. The
conduit was empty; no wires were present, although it may have
been used for that purpose in the past .
After removing most of the conduit with the backhoe, the exca-
vation was deepened to about 5-6 feet in order to determine the
possible existence of unknown buried tanks . There was no evi-
dence of any such vessels, and the soil beneath the conduit was
native material, which appeared to be undisturbed.
Because the two smaller anomalies detected on the south side of
the building were considerably weaker than the one excavated, it
was decided not to excavate in those areas . The excavation was
filled in and compacted and no further work was done.
The result of this work, and the fact that the two quarterly
monitoring events performed to date showed only minor amounts of
contaminants in either MW-1 or MW-2, suggests that the source of
those compounds most likely was caused by the major contamination
encountered during excavation of the leach field in this area.
Although we have selected the drilling contractors and other
vendors to perform the next stage of the work, we have not
received a response from the Cleanup Fund staff of the pre-
approval request package that has been submitted to them. Until
our client receives a reply to that request, he is reluctant to
proceed with the work. When approval is granted, we will
schedule the work as quickly as possible.
Due to events beyond our control, the original time shedule we
1
