KLEINFELDER
Kleznfelder indicated to Friedman & Bruya that the soil consisted of clay that was low in
porosity and permeability This type of soil would greatly decrease the amount of water and air
movement within the soil This would typically cause the rate of degradation to be very slow It
also may be in anaerobic conditions, which would decrease the rate even more Based on a slow
rate of degradation, it appears that the kerosene range material has been released for some time
The lack of n-alkanes indicates advanced degradation The age of this product is likely to be
older than ten years The diesel #2 range material appears to be from a more recent release The
lack of significant degradation is shown by the Gaussian curve of n-alkanes The age of this
product is therefore much newer, and it appears to have been released within the last five years
' 4 3 CONCLUSIONS
Independent Trucking Company has excavated approximately 1400 cubic yards of soil since the
diesel fuel release in May 1995 Given the volume soil excavated and the chemical and forensic
testing results, it appears that Independent Trucking Company has removed the bulk, if not all, of
the fuel released in May 1995 This conclusion is based on the following information
• Independent Trucking Company excavate
d 500 cubic yards of impacted soil
initially after the release occurred Confirmations samples were collected from
the initial excavation with no detectable petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations
• Kleznfelder drilled and sampled six soil borings that indicated that the extent of
migration was limited to less than a depth of 10 feet with the exception of one
boring which had petroleum hydrocarbons detected at 10 feet, but not at 15 feet
• An additional 900 cubic yards of soil were excavated to a depth of 21 feet
' • Forensic hydrocarbon analysis of a sample from the bottom of the second
excavation indicates that two materials are present in the soil One is a weathered
diesel 41/kerosene which appears to be older than 10 years based on weathering
patterns The second is a diesel 42/home heating oil that appears to have been
' released within the last five years
• TPH purgeable was detected in all three samples analyzed with concentrations up
to 630 mg/kg This would indicate a petroleum hydrocarbon such as gasoline
which was not stored in the aboveground storage tanks
23-482276-BOO/CR96S276 Page 8 of 1 1 October 17, 1996
' Copyright 1996 Kleinfelder,Inc
