What occurs
is a displacement or deformation
of the seal cross-section, rather
than an actual compression of the
material.
The space in which the larger 0 -
ring fits is closed only on three
sides. This allows the 0 -ring to be
displaced radially inward without
restriction. This freedom increas-
es the tolerance of the joint,
enabling it to perform even if
some misalignment occurs or
some slight variation in dimen-
sion exists.
Installation
Both 0 -rings are compressed lat-
erally as the closure piece and the
nut are rotated during assembly.
This sealing mechanism is not
typical for 0 -rings. Most 0 -rings
fit in a groove and are deformed
into the space of the groove as the
part to which they are to seal is
moved into position. With the
LCX joint design, the face of the
closure piece is pushing against
the side of the 0 -ring to make the
seal. This face is also rotating dur-
ing the assembly.
While sensitivity to epoxy resin can
happen, it is rare and associated
with constant exposure. More often,
the allergic reaction that occurs
when using adhesive may be a reac-
tion from using latex gloves.
As observed in the health care pro-
fessions where latex gloves are used
extensively, approximately 10% to
30°x6 of people may develop an aller-
This movement is the reason it is
critically important that the 0 -
ring be well lubricated with moto
oil prior to assembly. If any part c
that seal becomes dry or does not
slide on the face of the closing
part, the seal may be stretched
and not be properly positioned.
Once the assembly is completed,
the seal will remain in position fo
the life of the pipe line. The sur-
face of the face of the closure
piece is designed to be at an angle
in order to push the 0 -ring radial-
ly outward against the surface of
the containment fitting. Testing
has proven that the seal will
remain tight even under condi-
tions of a full vacuum in the
interstitial space between the pri-
mary and containment.
When the integrity of the contain-
ment system is confirmed during
the proof testing, the system will
remain tight. Static (pressure
remains on system constantly)
and cyclic (pressure is applied and
released repeatedly) testing has
proven the system remains intact.
A popular phrase used for fiber-
glass pipe is Fit it and forget it."
This accurately describes the LCX
product line.
If you have any additional ques-
tions on 0 -rings or Dualoy LCX,
contact the Ameron engineering
department in Burkburnett, Texas.
gic reaction to the latex used in
gloves.
Try using vinyl or other non -latex
gloves to alleviate the problem.
Hypo -allergenic gloves are also
available.
For background information on tl
topic, search the internet under
latex allergy, then look for gloves.
