Ramcon Standard Procedures
Standard Procedure 3 Rev2/o2
Sample Handling, Storage, Transportation, Chain-of-Custody Documentation and Request For Analysis.
Limitations: These procedures have been developed and adopted for utilization
primarily for the assessment of fuel and motor oil constituents at
underground storage tank or fuel spill sites.
Conditions: Conditions in the field may warrant variance from these procedures.
The variance will be documented and justified in writing and
accompanied by signature.
Equipment: Iced Insulated Cooler- Sample Labels
Marking pen with indelible ink- VOA Vials and L. Ambers
Chain-of-Custody Form including request for analysis
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the verifiable collection and transportation of samples and
to secure viable, accurate analytical information. Soil and water samples are collected and labeled,
and placed immediately in an iced cooler. Tap water ice contained in double bagged zip-lock bags,
or blue ice is used for cooler temperature control. The cooler is kept in the possession of the
Ramcon personnel, or it is secured with tape to indicate tampering or unauthorized entry.
Chain-of-Custody
As samples are collected in the field, a chain-of-custody form (COC) is filled out. The COC will
document,at a minimum,the site location or address,the sampler's name and signature,the sample
location, and a unique sample identification number. The COC will clearly indicate the date of
sample collection, and with water sample VOA analysis, the time of collection and preservatives
utilized. The COC will document, by signature, the possession and relinquishment of samples by
all responsible parties and receipt by analytical laboratory. The laboratory will note sample condition
upon receipt, especially headspace or air bubbles in VOA containers,or broken sample containers.
Any anomalies will be noted and explained by the laboratory. Samples not in receipt by the
analytical laboratory after 48 hours will not be considered valid without written, signed explanation.
HAWPDATA\MU(E\Proceed3hndln51-02 Page 1 of 2
