Ramcon Standard Procedures
Standard Procedure 4 Groundwater Monitoring and Sampling
disengaged. Pumps without ball-check valves shall be allowed to drain prior to removal from the well.
Sample Collection
Sample containers and chain-of-custody are labeled prior to sample collection to prevent inadvertent
mislabeling or switching of samples. Water samples are collected with disposable VOSS'n bailers and
disposable braided polyethylene rope. The bailer is carefully lowered into the water and retrieved rapidly
to the surface. Water is decanted into appropriate vessels by inserting the removable bailer tubing into the
bottom of the bailer and slowly twisting and pushing it upward. A steady stream of water is maintained until
the vessel is full. In the case of volatile organic analysis vials(VOA),a meniscus is generated, and the VOA
cap is wetted. The jars are immediately sealed and checked for headspace or air bubbles by inverting and
tapping them. If either is found the sample is re-opened and water added until the problem is resolved. The
samples are placed immediately upon ice in an insulated cooler for transport and relinquishment to a State-
Certified analytical laboratory.
Water Containment
Purge water is typically stored in DOT-17H drums. The containers must be located such that they do not
constitute a hazard to vehicle traffic or pedestrians. Assessment generated materials are the responsibility
of the property owner, however, the containers shall be marked with adhesive labels identifying the probable
contaminant, site location, property owner, site company, contact, phone number and date collected.
HIWPDATAIMIKENProceed\4H2O.DOC Pa,,,' 3 of 5
