'3
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET - DPI S30
INGESTION: Not considered to be a food product. Lab tests with
rats indicate colloidal silica, when taken orally in single or
repeated doses, has a low order of toxicity. If swallowed, induce
z# vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel . Do not
induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious
person. Get medical attention immediately.
INHALATION: Colloidal silica may cause a tissue response in the
lungs if mists or dried particles are inhaled. Overexposure by
inhalation may include temporary lung irritation with cough,
discomfort, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. If
inhaled, move to fresh air immediately. Treat symptomatically.
Note: Amorphous silica does not induce the lung effects
associated with crystalline silica. Individuals with pre-existing
diseases of the lung may have increased susceptibility to the
toxicity of excessive exposures.
TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
3
Colloidal silica is not listed as a carcinogen by IARC, NTP,
OSHA, or ACGIH. The product is a slight skin irritant and a mild
eye irritant in animals. Toxic effects observed in animals
exposed by inhalation include upper respiratory irritation and
emphysema. Toxic effects described in animals exposed by
ingestion include nonspecific effects such as weight loss and
diarrhea. Toxic effects described in animals exposed by
insufflation (intratracheal instillation) for one to two years
include collengated fibrosis of the lungs.
WORK PLACE EXPOSURE LIMITS
Dusts resulting from dried colloidal silica spills or deposits
can be considered to be amorphous silica. The exposure limits for
t,
amorphous silica are:
OSHA 29CFR1910.1000 TLV/TWA: 6mg/m3 total particulate
ACGIH TLV/TWA: 10 mg/m3 total particulate
PRECAUTIONS
PERSONAL PROTECTION: Where contact may occur, wear rubber gloves,
chemical safety goggles, and protective clothing (long sleeves) .
Wash hands before eating, smoking or using restroom. Where there
is a potential for inhalation exposure to product dust or mist in
k exist of exposure limits, use NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator.
DEERPOINT INDUSTRIES, INC.
32 Deer Point Dr. , Hawthorn Woods, IL. 60047
