PUBLIC HEALTH SEIrRCES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY = 'i
JOGI KHANNA M.D.,M.P.H.
Health Officer
C4C/
P.O. Box 2009 (1601 East Hazelton Avenue) Stockton,California 95201 FpR`P
(209) 468-3400
June 3 , 1990
Julian Munoz
Safeway Stores, Inc.
2800 Ignacio Valley Road D U
Walnut Creek, CA 94598
IN REPLY REFER TO SITE CODE: 1194
RE: Safeway Meat Packing Facility
1111 Navy Drive, Stockton
Subsurface Investigation Report
We have reviewed the January, 1990 Subsurface Investigation
Report prepared for this site by Western Geologic Resources, Inc.
The investigation included installation of one additional
groundwater monitoring well and sampling of five additional soil
borings.
The groundwater elevation at the site has lowered approximately
seven feet and the direction of groundwater flow has changed
since the last sampling (September, 1988) . Petroleum
hydrocarbons have not been detected in groundwater at this site.
However, proper screen placement in the monitoring wells has been
questioned. Furthermore, soil samples obtained from within one
foot of the saturated zone in three of the soil borings contained
petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations as high as 2 , 400 parts
per million. Because none of these borings were completed as
groundwater monitoring wells, it is not possible to determine
whether groundwater has been impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons.
Based on the recent decline in water levels, the changes in
gradient, and the concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in
soils within the previous zone of saturation, we feel that
additional groundwater sampling and measuring should be
conducted. This should confirm the gradient and aid in
evaluating the need for further groundwater investigation.
Notify San Joaquin County, Environmental Health Division, prior
to sampling so we may witness it.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
