Box 2009
Stockton CA 95201
SAFEWAY MEAT PACKING PLANT, 1111 NAVY DRIVE, STOCKTON - SUBSURFACE
INVESTIGATION REPORT
We have reviewed the January 1990 Subsurface Investigation Report prepared for
this site by Western Geologic Resources, Inc. The investigation included
installation of one additional ground water monitoring well and five soil
borings on-site.
The ground water elevation at the site has lowered approximately seven feet
and the direction of ground water flow has changed since the last sampling
(September 1988) . Petroleum hydrocarbons have not been detected in ground
water at this site. However, soil samples obtained from within one foot of
the saturated zone in three of the soil borings contained petroleum
hydrocarbons at concentrations as high as 2,400 parts per million. Because
none of these borings were completed as ground water monitoring wells, it is
not possible to determine whether ground water has been impacted by petroleum
hydrocarbons.
Based on the recent decline in water levels, the changes in gradient, and the
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in soils within the previous zone of
saturation, we believe that a monitoring program should be developed for this
site. This monitoring program should include, but may not be limited to,
routine monitoring of the existing wells to evaluate changes in the direction
of ground water flow, and the chemical quality of ground water at this site,
and submittal of monitoring reports.
To verify the findings of this monitoring program, we recommend that staff of
the San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
be on-site to observe sampling procedures and obtain split samples. This
information will be useful in evaluating the need for further ground water
investigation.
If you have any questions, please call me at (916) 361-5731.
THOMAS D.
