(ERM) in March 1995 at the Safeway site in Stockton. In addition,
groundwater flow direction is discussed in light of a correction to a surveyed well
head elevation at MW-6. The current site status is also briefly discussed.
March 1995 Groundwater Monitoring
... Groundwater samples collected in March were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel by EPA Method 8015 (modified) and for polynuclear
aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) by EPA Method 8310. PNAs were collected in-
anticipation of performing a risk assessment in order to obtain site closure. A
coliform sample was also collected from MW-6 as requested by Public Health Services,
San Joaquin County (the County).
A four inch diameter bailer was decontaminated prior to purging each well by washing
the bailer in a Liquinox solution and rinsing with clean water, followed by a deionized
water rinse. Each monitoring well was purged by removing a minimum of three well
casing volumes of water and until consecutive conductivity, pH, and temperature
measurements varied by less than 10%. Samples were collected with a clean disposable
bailer. Field notes, which include depth to water measurements, temperature,
conductivity and pH information, are included as Attachment 1 to this letter.
Analyses of samples collected in March 1995 showed detections of fuel in the diesel
range at very low levels, consistent with previous data collected since 1991. PNAs
were not detected in wells MW-4 and MW-5. PNAs were detected in groundwater
collected from MW-6: Phenanthrene (0.95 ug/L), Anthracene (7.7 ug/L) and Pyrene
s.. (0-038 ug/L). Figure 1 illustrates the hydrocarbon concentration at each monitoring
well. TPH and coliform results of the sampling are summarized in Table 1.
Table 1
March 1995 Groundwater Analytical Results
Sample TPH Total Coliform
MW-4 250 gg/l N/A
-' MW-5 740µg/l N/A
MW-6 770µg/1 5.0 CFU/100m1
Ern A member of the Environmental
Resor r,a \1an.ecement Gr(111r`
